There is often confusion between the definition of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, dementia is not a specific disease. Rather it is the overall term used to describe a wide range of symptoms that cause a decline in memory and other cognitive skills that reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities.
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for up to 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases, while vascular dementia, which is caused by the damage from a stroke, is the second most common cause. Other types of dementia may be a result of Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases, and a person may have more than one form of dementia. Thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, brain tumors, medication side effects as well as depression, excessive alcohol us and even infectious diseases can cause dementia-like symptoms; however in these cases, once the problem is correctly diagnosed, it is reversible. This is why health care providers state the importance of getting a professional evaluation to determine the cause of your or your loved one’s symptoms. In addition getting an accurate diagnosis at the onset of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia allows the person to receive the maximum benefit from the available treatments. Furthermore, it gives the person time to plan for their future. The Mayo Clinic defines prediabetes as the condition where a person’s “blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes.” They go on to say that without intervention, a person is in danger of becoming diabetic in 10 years or less; however, there are steps you can take to help prevent this from happening.
While it is not known exactly what causes prediabetes, we do know that family history and genetics play a significant role. The Mayo Clinic explains that the genetic link has been confirmed by research with the discovery of some insulin resistant genes. In addition studies show that excess fat; especially abdominal fat as well as inactivity are “important factors in the development of prediabetes.” The job of glucose (sugar) in our bodies is to fuel the cells that make up our muscles and other tissues. We get glucose from any food we eat that has carbohydrates and not just from sweets. As our food is digested, glucose enters the bloodstream, and “with the help of insulin, it enters the body's cells where it is utilized as a source of energy.” For someone who has prediabetes, it means they have stopped processing glucose properly, and it is building up in their bloodstream, no longer providing fuel for their cells. To help prevent prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes, you need to make changes in your lifestyle. A good way to start trying to normalize your blood sugar levels is to get plenty of physical exercise, make healthier food choices, and lose weight if you carry a lot of excess body fat. In addition all throughout the year residents participate in a variety of activities, programs and special events that are interesting, educational and fun.
An example of one of our special activities is our recent Veterans Day ceremony. Our impressive 58 veterans from MorningStar of Sparks gathered by the flag pole where two of our veterans raised the flag at 11:11am as the National Anthem was sung. Every veteran received a symbol of our thanks in the form of a certificate and patriotic Christmas ornament. And our community loves to celebrate every holiday in style with activities such as our salute to Halloween with a “scary” round of Bingo. TV Horror Show host, Zomboo was invited to be our Bingo caller. Also adding spooky humor to the game: the “Crazy Cat Lady” and her cats, GI Girl and the Bride of Frankenstein. Resident Irene was our big (and not at all scary) Bingo winner. Fun was had by all! At MorningStar of Sparks, we also like to get out and about. Recently our residents were treated to a visit to Andelin Family Farms. We enjoyed a scenic hayride through the farm, followed by a meet and greet with some of its furry occupants: everything from pigs from New Zealand to alpacas from the Andes. We encourage you to take a look at our website and scroll through our recent happenings to get a sense of the fellowship and fun our staff and residents have on a daily basis in our community. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that almost 1 out 3 people in the U.S. will develop shingles, also known as zoster or herpes, at some point in their lives and that 50% of those cases occur in women and men 60 years and older. With approximately 1 million cases reported each year, you can get shingles if you have ever had chickenpox as the varicella-zoster virus remains inactive in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain.
The Mayo Clinic says symptoms can occur anywhere on the body but “most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso.” While not life-threatening, the rash is very painful and complications from shingles include a long-lasting pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) that can last for months or even years. Generally the first symptom is pain, and given the common location around the trunk, it can be confused with problems of the heart, lungs or kidneys. The course of the disease can be improved and shortened with early treatment and a vaccine can lessen the risk of getting shingles. While some people will never develop a rash, you need to see a doctor immediately if you suspect shingles. According to the Mayo Clinic common symptoms include: ● pain, burning, numbness or tingling ● sensitivity to touch ● a red rash that begins a few days after the pain ● fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over ● itching Other symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue and sensitivity to light. The CDC recommends that anyone 60 years or older should get a shingles vaccine even if they have already had the disease as it can prevent future occurrences. The CDC states that, “Zostavax® is the only shingles vaccine currently approved for use in the United States.” They add that, “This vaccine reduces the risk of developing shingles by 51% and PHN by 67%.” A shingles vaccine requires just one dose and can be done by your doctor or at a pharmacy. Sources: https://www.cdc.gov/shingles/ http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shingles/basics/definition/con-20019574 As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent senior living or assisted living community. In part, that may be due to the fact that typically today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities. As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.
When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities. Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, pulling weeds, and other housekeeping chores. Furthermore, seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation. Also as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves. This is something that is not a problem in senior living communities. While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone. For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior living communities usually offer some form of transportation. In addition many communities routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping malls or other events. We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well. In some cases, preparing food has become more difficult as well as grocery shopping. Most assisted living communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and serve residents three daily meals. This is especially important for residents with dietary restrictions as most diets are accommodated. Another frequently overlooked benefit of seniors moving into senior living communities is they do not need to depend on their grown children or other family members as they did when living on their own. This allows both parties to just enjoy one another again. Grown children no longer find themselves in the position of have to parent their parent as the senior is getting needs meet at their “new home.” Finally we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age. Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around. If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand for residents at an assisted living community. At MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks, we offer residents a safe and secure place to age in and to enjoy our many amenities and activities. Source:aplaceformom.com/blog/why-seniors-prefer-senior-living-communities/ While most elderly adults are not going to participate in a triathlon, they do want to be as physically fit as possible. In several interesting studies conducted by Joseph Baker, and recently reported on by the Washington Post, he looks at the question of whether “age decline is a result of simply getting older or being sedentary.” Baker, a professor and head of the LifeSpan Health and Performance Laboratory in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science at York University in Toronto, and his team of researchers wanted to know why some 70-year-olds can still compete in vigorous athletic competitions while others get winded walking up a flight of stairs.
Baker based the premise of his research on a pivotal 1996 Stanford University study that still serves as the biomarker for the aging process more than twenty years later. The Stanford study analyzed age-related decline by looking at individuals’ “number of muscle cells, DNA repair, fingernail growth and physical activity.” Researchers found that participants had a 0.5 percent decline per year in these factors. One of the studies that Baker and his team of Canadian researchers did in 2010 is titled “Do or Decline.” It was published by the Journal of Health Psychology and involved more than 12,000 adults. Participants were asked a series of questions on issues ranging from their health condition, cognitive capacity and social engagement to their physical activity. The study found that “inactivity was a much stronger predictor of functional limitations than either chronic disease or being socially unengaged with life.” Studies such as these suggest that even moderate levels of physical activity can improve a person’s physiological, psychological and social conditions. Baker explains that research like his may help to debunk the widely held notion that all physical decline experienced by an older adult is a natural part of aging. Furthermore, he asserts that, “Self-efficacy and your belief in your ability to achieve an outcome is very important for predicting performance outcomes and a person’s behavior.” At MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks, our residents have plenty of opportunity to stay active both physically and mentally. We provide a full monthly calendar of wellness activities along with special outings and events. Our community offers 128 beautiful suites for independent living and 80 for assisted living along with and 32 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Source:washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/do-or-decline-an-athletes-age-may-be-less-important-to-performance-than-persistent-practice/?utm_term=.221660a00ccd Research continues to show a strong correlation between pet ownership and a number of benefits to seniors. Everything from helping the elderly to stay physically active, to lowering blood pressure, reducing stress, providing companionship and making depression less likely are attributed to having a pet. In fact there are several studies that indicate that patients with heart problems do better when they are responsible for a pet.
Not only do pets offer lots of affection and unconditional love but they can also help seniors cope with the loss of a loved one. In an article from AgingCare.com, a New Jersey psychotherapist, Dr. Jay P. Granat, discusses some of the other intangibles that pets offer to the elderly. He states that, "Dogs—and other pets—live very much in the here and now. They don't worry about tomorrow. And tomorrow can be very scary for an older person. By having an animal with that sense of now, it tends to rub off on people." At MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks, we wholeheartedly agree that pets provide many benefits to seniors, which is why we are proud that our community is pet friendly. Along with our residents’ pets, we also have a couple of special “house pets” that provide companionship and warmth throughout our entire community. Willow, an adorable Golden Doodle, is a gentle, loving dog who is a big hit with all of our residents and staff. Additionally we recently welcomed Paradise, a Senegal parrot, into our family. Senegal parrots are renowned for their calm, quiet disposition along with their intelligence and ability to learn complex tricks. At just three months old, Paradise is already fully grown, and is content to spend the day perched upon any willing shoulder. Or which would be best suited for their needs. To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe a community that is designed specifically for seniors who want to and are able to live without any help. Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy, but require a helping hand with daily activities.
Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle. While each community can vary, many offer daily meals, transportation, and a range of other amenities and social activities. Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with yardwork and other routine chores that need to be done when owning a home. At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision. Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family. Other amenities offered by assisted living communities include a range of activities and wellness programs. At MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks, we provide high-quality independent living, assisted living and memory care as well as respite care. According to the Mayo Clinic, the elderly are among one of the groups of people that are more susceptible to dehydration. They cite the following reasons for this including the fact that a senior’s ability to conserve water is lessened while at the same time they experience a diminished sense of thirst. Furthermore, a senior’s capacity to respond to changes in temperature is reduced and many do not adept well to extremely hot or cold weather. These issues are often compounded by the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, dementia and kidney problems. There are even certain medications that can contribute to the elderly being more susceptible to dehydration.
As we age our kidneys’ lose some of their ability to concentrate urine and retain water during episodes of fluid deprivation. Also a reduced sensation of thirst means that many seniors forget to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Moreover disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia can create swallowing problems that make it more difficult to drink. Other factors that can contribute to dehydration include a decrease in mobility and incontinence. The dangers of dehydration are many and often results in emergency visits and hospitalization and have even been associated with increased mortality rates in the elderly. Additionally it is related to a range of health issues such as falling, constipation, and impaired cognition and confusion. So what steps should you take to ensure you or your loved one stays hydrated? Experts advise that every time you take a pill to drink a full glass of water. Also have healthy fluids readily available throughout the day and avoid sugar-laden drinks as well as salty foods. This post is intended for informational purposes only.
