In addition to MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan offering seniors a choice of smartly-designed spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans, we also allow residents to share living arrangements. Our Companion Living program is specifically designed for unrelated seniors of the same sex to share a suite. This arrangement is available to both our assisted living and memory care residents.
What are the benefits? Actually there are many reasons it may make good sense for you or a family member that is considering senior living. Since we understand that people are designed for relationships, most of us flourish when we are in one. However, the fact is that many seniors have lost their long-term life partner and are left feeling bereft and isolated. So besides offering the economic benefit of splitting the monthly rent expense in half, a roommate can help alleviate many of these feelings. In addition to providing a companion, a roommate can make the transition period for a new in-coming resident much easier. The seasoned community member can help guide their new companion through all the facets of senior living and make them feel more confident in socializing with the entire community. Also another often overlooked advantage to companion living is that since roommates inherently look out after one another, they may be the first one to notice a change in the health of their roomie. To ensure the arrangement works for both parties, MorningStar at Jordan goes to great lengths to match residents who wish to participate in companion living and pair residents based on similar backgrounds and shared interests. Furthermore, even when you share the rent with another resident, you are still offered the full scope of MorningStar resort-style amenities including daily meals, activities, scheduled transportation, entertainment and much more. Please contact us if you think this is something you would be interested in. Recently the Harvard Study of Adult Development, the longest, most comprehensive examination of aging ever conducted, reported some interesting results regarding the “secrets of aging well.” Surprisingly the study shows that rather than focusing on lowering your cholesterol and stress levels, you may be better off by having close, personal relationships. Researchers have concluded that embracing community can actually help us to live longer, and be happier.
Although started in the 1930’s with just men, the study was broadened through the years to include both men and women from adolescence to old age. The results have even surprised the director, psychiatrist George Vaillant, MD, senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He says, "I had expected that the longevity of your parents, the quality of your childhood, and your cholesterol levels would be very influential." He and the other researchers were surprised these variables were not more important than they were. Another commonly held notion is that stress adversely affects our health and wellbeing, and again, the study found that it is not the actual stress we go through but how well we deal with it. As the old adage reminds us, it is better to make lemonade out of lemons and having good adjustment and coping skills are important to effectively dealing with stress. Researchers also cite other factors that account for our longevity including avoiding cigarettes, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and pursuing education. Source: webmd.com/healthy-aging/features/secrets-of-aging-well#1 Health providers say that whether you or 18 or 80, it is important to do both cardiovascular exercises as well as strengthening exercises. In addition to experiencing the benefits of better tone and shape, “research now links not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.” Presently the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends doing strength training at least two times a week.
Many older adults do not think about strength training, and for those that are exercising, have limited their exercise to things like walking, swimming, jogging, or bike riding. Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine, explains we now have very good evidence that shows 80-year-olds are as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds. She adds, “and this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months." The large 2016 study found strengthening exercises helped to prevent age-related bone and muscle loss. Led by Dr. Kraschnewski, the study drew on data from the National Health Interview Survey and followed 30,000 adults age 65 years and older for fifteen years. While only 10 percent of the participants met the national guidelines for twice weekly strength training, those individuals had 46 percent lower odds of dying from any cause, or all-cause mortality. Furthermore they were less likely to die from cancer or cardiovascular disease. Experts say you do not have to start lifting heavy weights as strength training includes using exercise bands, doing push-ups or yoga. However be sure to check with your physician before you began any new exercise. Often a family is not sure whether it would be better for mom or dad to move into an assisted living community. Making the decision more difficult is the fact that many seniors can be resistant to moving, and they do not like the idea of leaving their home and everything familiar to them. However the most important thing to consider is whether your parent’s current living situation meets their overall health and medical needs, their physical needs, and safety. If it doesn’t, it is time to start a conversation about making a change.
Your parents or senior loved ones may no longer be safe at home if they are having falls. The National Council on Aging reports that one in four adults over the age of 65 have a fall each year and those statistics are higher in older seniors. In fact every 11 seconds a senior is treated at an emergency room for injuries suffered in a fall. Other mobility factors that may comprise their safety include struggling to go up and down stairs as well as difficulty getting up from a chair or their bed. Another indication your parent may not be functioning well on their own is if you find they are looking disheveled and neglecting their appearance. You probably will also want to take a look around the house and see if they are keeping it up or is it untidy and disorganized. Furthermore, are they taking their medications as prescribed and are they eating well? The staff at MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan knows how to take care of these needs as well as to provide a warm, comfy atmosphere to make sure all of our residents feel right at home. Our beautiful community offers both assisted living suites and memory care. MorningStar is a company unlike most others as our mission includes honoring God in our business practices as well as in our relationships. We also invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well. We help build fulfilling careers for our team members and whenever possible, we promote from within. MorningStar at RidgeGate offers a variety of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. While memory care is all-inclusive, the cost of an assisted living suite is determined by the level of care the resident requires.
MorningStar’s assisted living has five levels and uses a simple point system, which factors into account the cost and time it takes to provide each service. Whether it involves help with personal daily care activities such as grooming, bathing and toileting, or medical assistance, we come up with a cumulative score that places you within one of our five levels. Before an assisted living resident even joins our community, our Wellness Director meets with them and their family to go over their medical history and discuss their needs. From there, we create a care plan approved by the resident that ensures their comfort and safety. In addition, we offer daily health monitoring and periodically review a resident’s care plan to make sure it is still up-to-date. For assisted living and memory care, we provide dedicated 24-hour Care Managers, a CPR-trained staff member on every shift, and a full-time nurse onsite and on call 24-7. We also have Certified Medication Care Managers, pharmacy services and much more. For your safety, each room of our suites including the bathroom has an emergency call button. In all three neighborhoods (independent living, assisted living and memory care), our suites are rented, month-to-month with a 30-day vacate notice in assisted living and 90-day notice in independent living. The Mayo Clinic defines prediabetes as the condition where a person’s “blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes.” They go on to say that without intervention, a person is in danger of becoming diabetic in 10 years or less; however, there are steps you can take to help prevent this from happening.
While it is not known exactly what causes prediabetes, we do know that family history and genetics play a significant role. The Mayo Clinic explains that the genetic link has been confirmed by research with the discovery of some insulin resistant genes. In addition studies show that excess fat; especially abdominal fat as well as inactivity are “important factors in the development of prediabetes.” The job of glucose (sugar) in our bodies is to fuel the cells that make up our muscles and other tissues. We get glucose from any food we eat that has carbohydrates and not just from sweets. As our food is digested, glucose enters the bloodstream, and “with the help of insulin, it enters the body's cells where it is utilized as a source of energy.” For someone who has prediabetes, it means they have stopped processing glucose properly, and it is building up in their bloodstream, no longer providing fuel for their cells. To help prevent prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes, you need to make changes in your lifestyle. A good way to start trying to normalize your blood sugar levels is to get plenty of physical exercise, make healthier food choices, and lose weight if you carry a lot of excess body fat.
